The hire of Wembley Stadium by Tottenham Hotspur during the 2017/18 season generated an additional revenue stream for WNST. As part of its commitment to Brent residents, extra funding of over £100,000, on top of our regular £300,000 per annum, was distributed to local groups earlier in 2018. However, the WNST trustees also made a commitment to distribute some funding into LB Haringey (Spurs’ home borough) in response to local people there helping to generate this additional income through their regular attendance at Wembley during the season.
This one-off funding distribution offered grants of up to £2,500 to local sports clubs for the purchase of new kit and equipment, undertake minor works to sports premises or to set up a new project. The programme was very well received and we concluded with the award of 38 grants totalling £77,380. These covered a wide range of sports from football and cricket, to bowls, rugby, basketball, swimming and netball. By focusing on kit and capital equipment, we hope that the funds will be of use to thousands of local people for many years to come.
North London Cricket Club, based in Crouch End was one the groups to benefit. It is one of the oldest sports associations in the borough and still one of the most active. Funds were awarded towards the purchase of some new junior playing kit and a new bowling machine, to increase coaching capacity across the club.
Club chairman, Martin Issitt said “We were pleased to learn that the Trust was to make these one-off grants awards to sports clubs in Haringey and even more delighted when our application was successful. It’s important with our junior teams that we have a stock of clothing and equipment available, so that no young person is prevented from playing because their family can’t afford the kit. Our juniors are now playing in regional tournaments, which requires coloured “one-day cricket” clothing and it’s important that all the players are dressed as a team.
“We’re also attracting new players, especially at junior level and want to ensure that everyone has access to good coaching and training facilities. The new bowling machine will double our capacity and give all of our members a better experience. Many thanks to WNST for supporting us. It will make a real difference.”
