Wembley Football League kicks off again

Last weekend saw the launch of season 2 of the Wembley Football League, providing regular competitive football for local young people living in and around LB Brent.

The league, first played in 2021, provides opportunities for those keen young footballers who might otherwise not get the chance to play.  For decades there was no youth football league dedicated to the borough that is the location of Wembley Stadium and the home of the game.  In order to play competitively outside of school, local teams, young people and their families have had to travel outside the borough, to Harrow, Camden or Islington.  These are excellent set-ups but they are not a “home” tournament and the Wembley Football League looks to complement that provision rather than being a competitor.

All fixtures in the Wembley Football League are played on Saturday mornings at Ark Elvin Academy on Wembley High Rd – this provides both a safe, neutral venue for all participants and helps reduce travelling time and cost. Games are officiated by referees from Middlesex FA, ensuring high quality appointments and fair play for all.

The first round of games provided some excellent entertainment.  Both U10s and U13s competitions look like they will be fiercely fought as the season progresses towards finals day in mid-July.  By running the same age groups as last year, the League is giving a new cohort of players the chance to compete.

WNST is delighted to be supporting the Wembley Football League again this year.  But as ever, we acknowledge the contributions of the organiser, Zaffar van Kalwala, the Legue partners, Middlesex FA and QPR in the Community, as well as the team coaches and volunteers, who give so much of their time and experience to support and train the young people.

It was also great to see so many parents and carers coming along to support the teams.  Positive encouragement from the sidelines is a great part of the game, helping the young people to enjoy the experience.
